What factors influence women to stay in the work-place and how do they believe their appearance influences their position? Join Marilyn DeLong, Curator, and Delores DeFore, past President of the boutique clothier, Harold, to view the beautiful wardrobe pieces of three women who held prominent careers in the Twin Cities. This exhibition, drawn from the collections of the Goldstein Museum of Design, focuses on the stories of women, in the past who have shared their experiences with their clothing, including motivation for selecting items, what they valued when they wore them, and those practices and experiences of wearing that make them special.
After the tour, we will meet informally to discuss the Goldstein Museum more generally as well as follow up questions relative to the exhibition.

“Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” stars Minnesota’s very own Thomasina Petrus and recounts Billie Holiday’s life story through the songs that made her famous. The year: 1959. The place: a small, intimate bar in Philadelphia where Holiday puts on a show that, unbeknownst to the audience, will leave them witnesses to one of her final performances. Highlighted by the bold and innovative direction of Marion McClinton, in Jungle’s intimate and jewel box-like space, we are sure to find ourselves engaged, challenged and delighted with this beautiful and nuanced contemporary work.

Roderick Cox was named the Minnesota Orchestra’s associate conductor in September 2016. He leads classical concerts and conducts Young People’s Concerts, family programs and Live at Orchestra Hall performances, and serves as a link to the community including school visits and collaboration with Minnesota arts and cultural institutions.
Mr. Cox, a native of Macon, GA, earned a Master of Music degree in conducting from Northwestern University. In 2013 he was awarded a conducting prize from the Aspen Music Festival, which led to national recognition.
In October 2017 Mr. Cox led “Send Me Hope”, a collaborative concert with the Minnesota Orchestra, local community artists and church choirs. During the 2016-17 Season, Mr. Cox led the orchestra in a “Spirit of the Season” concert at Shiloh Ministries in north Minneapolis. At Sommerfest 2018 he will conduct a “Symphony in 60” program of music by Beethoven, Salonen and other composers.

#6 Elaborate Works of Art Exhibit

Allow one hour for tour. Handicapped accessible. Wear comfortable shoes for walking.
The four story, 15-panel glass artwork was installed at the entrance to the new Clinic and Specialty Center, across from Hennepin County Medical Center’s Emergency Department. The elaborate panel was created by British architectural glass artist Martin Donlin, who is known throughout the world for his artwork.
Patients, families, visitors and staff enter a space that embraces healing and wellness. The Center opened in March and includes more than 600 pieces of art including the glass installation, which will be its signature piece. Wanda Ballinger will be our guide. Rachel Trockman, retired pediatrician, will speak about two installations sponsored by her family.
